Sheppard School is a neighborhood school with an annex that houses four Kindergarten classes. Four Hundred and thirty (430) students are served by 31 staff members many of who have been at Sheppard for over twenty years. Sheppard has 94% Latino students that is the largest percentage of Latino students attending any of the school district’s school.
The remaining students are 5% African American and 1% White. The school’s poverty level is approximately 98%, which entitles the school to Title I and III federal funds to support the school programs.
Balanced Literacy, 100 Book Challenge, Reading Recovery, Reasoning and Writing, Philadelphia Reads tutoring are among the education programs provided at Sheppard. The Extended Day program uses Voyager materials. A “child centered” atmosphere permeates our school and is one of our strengths. Among our special programs are: a Multi-aged Pre-First class, a Multi-aged class for 1 & 2 grade students with a bilingual Special Education teacher and a Multi-aged class for students in grades 2 and 3 is provided for students one to two years below grade level.
Transitional Bilingual programs to meet the meet the needs of our ELL students is incrementally being replaced each year with a Dual Language programs which provides literacy in both languages (Spanish and English) in a classroom atmosphere where language and culture are integrated. Students who are not enrolled in bilingual classes receive pull-out ESOL support.
Sheppard also provides self-contained, resource room and inclusion classes for students with special needs. Our school also has a MG population who is serviced by the Technology teacher leader.
