Below are answers to common questions about the registration process.

The School District of Philadelphia Is Now Registering New Students for 2012-2013 School Year


The School District of Philadelphia’s neighborhood elementary, middle and high schools are now open to register students new to the District for the upcoming school year.

Who needs to register?


The following persons need to register to attend Philadelphia public schools:

  • Philadelphia public school students who have moved to another city neighborhood over the summer
  • Children new to Philadelphia
  • Children transferring in from private, parochial and charter schools
  • Kindergarten students who were not pre-registered in the spring

When and where should I register?


Schools are open for registration Monday to Friday, August 20 through Friday, September 7, 2011

Registration hours vary by grade: Families should contact schools to confirm registration times.

High Schools

Generally, hours are 8:30 am to 1:00 pm.

High school students must accompany their parents to registration so that the students may select courses.

Elementary and Middle Schools

Generally, hours are 8:30 am to 1:00 pm.

Elementary Schools, Including Kindergarten

The District’s elementary school registration, including kindergarten, is ongoing through September 7th. The hours are 8:30 am to 1 pm at the family’s neighborhood elementary school. For enrollment in kindergarten for 2012-2013, children must be five years old by September 1, 2012.

Documents needed for registration


  1. Parent/Legal Guardian must provide photo Identification (examples: Current PA Drivers License/Non-Drivers License or valid Federal, State or Municipal employment identification, Passport).
  2. Proof of Residency (examples: Deed, Original Rental Agreement/Lease (must be typed, signed by all parties and notarized), Current Voter Registration Card, Current Utility Bill, (e.g. PECO, PGW), Foster care and DHS letters are also acceptable for registration when student is in the care of a Foster/child care agency. Shelter placement or residency letters are also acceptable for homeless students).
  3. Proof of your child’s age. Acceptable proof includes birth, baptismal or other religious certificates, a passport or immigration documents.
  4. Your child's Health Appraisal Forms and immunization records showing proof of the following inoculations: Diphtheria, Tetanus, Poliomyelitis, Measles, Mumps, Rubella (German measles), Hepatitis B, and Varicella (chicken pox).
  5. Your child’s most recent report card and any other useful information (IEP, etc.) from the child’s former school or school district.

Alternative Exceptions

Religious Exemption: Pupils need not be immunized if the parent or guardian objects, in writing, to the immunization based on religious beliefs or strong moral/ethical convictions.

Medical Exemption: Pupils need not be immunized if a physician or his/her designee states, in writing, that immunization may be detrimental to the health of the child. When the physician determines that immunization is no longer detrimental to the health of the child, the medical exemption ceases to be valid and the child must be immunized.

Registration for new immigrant students


If your child is new to the country, school registration will be provided with complete translation and interpretation services August 1 through August 31, 2012. For more information click here.

September 7 is First School Day for Grades 1 – 12


The first day of school in the School District of Philadelphia for students in grades 1 through 12 is Friday, September 7.

For students in kindergarten, pre-kindergarten Head Start and Bright Futures, the first day of school is Wednesday, September 19.

All School District schools and offices will be closed on September 17 and 18 for Rosh Hashanah.

What school will my child attend?

A child is assigned to the neighborhood school. To determine which school serves a particular address, call the Parent and Customer Call Center at 215-400-4000 weekdays between 8 am and 5 pm, or use the SDP School Finder.

Can I enroll my child in a kindergarten program outside my neighborhood this fall?

You may visit your neighborhood elementary school and fill out a Voluntary Transfer Program Elementary/Middle School Pupil Transfer Application.
