School District of Philadelphia Winter Break Schedule.

All Regional Offices, the Education Center (440 North Broad Street) and all Comprehensive Early Learning Centers (CELC) are OPEN for regular business hours on Monday, December 28 through Thursday, December 31.

The Regional Offices, Education Center and CELC will be closed on Friday, January 1, 2010 for New Year's Day and will re-open on Monday, January 4, 2010.

All School District of Philadelphia schools, Prekindergarten Head Start and Bright Futures programs are closed through January 1, 2010 for winter break. All schools, Head Start and Bright Futures programs will reopen at their regular times on Monday, January 4, 2010.

December 23, 2009 - Winter Catalog of Professional Learning Opportunities for the months of January - March, 2010. Grand opening of new Professional Development Centers to take place on January 12, 2010

Imagine 2014 is becoming a reality every day in the School District of Philadelphia. On Tuesday, January 12, 2010, the District will have the simultaneous grand openings of four new Regional Professional Development Centers. These centers provide teachers, school leaders, and other staff with multiple opportunities to reflect on their work without the usual distractions of the work day. December 16, 2009 - Youth Heart Watch at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and School District of Philadelphia Partner to Save Students’ Lives

Youth Heart Watch at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia presented an automated external defibrillator (AED) to every middle school in the School District of Philadelphia. The District middle schools that will receive the AED machines are: A.M.Y. at James Martin, A.M.Y. Northwest, Baldi, Barratt, Beeber, Clemente, Conwell, Feltonville School of Arts and Sciences, Harding, Hill-Freedman, Jones, LaBrum, Leeds, Meehan, Middle Years Alternative (MYA), Penn Treaty, Pepper, Roosevelt, Shaw, Sheridan West, Stetson, Tilden, Edwin Vare, Wagner, Grover Washington and Woodrow Wilson.

November 18, 2009 - Presentation by Chief Business Officer Michael Masch at a special School Reform Commission public budget hearing meeting updating the District Fiscal Year 2010 budget.

On November 18, Chief Business Officer Michael Masch gave an update on the proposed revised District Fiscal Year 2010 budget. The revised proposed budget is based on the funding the School District of Philadelphia will receive from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and what proposed steps the District will take to close the funding gap. The SRC is scheduled to consider adoption of a revised Fiscal Year 2010 budget for the District in December.

October 30, 2009 - School District of Philadelphia announces public schools will remain open in the event of a SEPTA transit strike

The School District of Philadelphia is sending home letters to parents and students and giving notice to employees concerning District operations in the event of a SEPTA transit strike. In the letter to parents, the District asks parents to be aware of the following important information: All Philadelphia Public Schools and administrative offices will be open, all after school programs will operate as scheduled, yellow school bus service will continue to be provided for those students who normally ride yellow school buses. Unfortunately, yellow school bus service will not be available for students who normally ride SEPTA; and Parents, especially those who ride SEPTA themselves, should make arrangements for children to be picked up promptly from after school programs.

October 27, 2009 - School District of Philadelphia celebrates the groundbreaking of the new West Philadelphia High School

School District of Philadelphia Superintendent Dr. Arlene Ackerman, School Reform Commission members and students at West Philadelphia High School gathered on October 27 to mark an important occasion in the history of that area of Philadelphia—the groundbreaking for the new West Philadelphia High School. Actual construction on the school is expected to start in late November or early December of this year and the new West Philadelphia High School is expected to be completed and open to students by September 2011 for the 2011-12 school year.

October 21, 2009 - Press Release: School District of Philadelphia Renaissance Schools Advisory Board summary of recommendations

The Renaissance Schools initiative will develop and implement a process to transform the District’s lowest performing schools by working with school communities to recruit and select individuals and organizations that have a proven track record of operating and supporting high achieving schools. The school and provider selection process is scheduled to be completed by the spring of 2010 and the first stage of the initiative will be launched in the 2010-2011 school year.
